Rick Lewers, currently Rector of Engadine, and well-known to many in Sydney, has been elected as Bishop of Armidale at this weekend’s Armidale election synod in Moree. Rick will take up the reins after the retirement of Bishop Peter Brain in April.
Please uphold in prayer Rick and his family, the people of Armidale diocese, and the church at Engadine, as they serve the Lord Jesus in the days ahead.
(The Synod began with a short-list of three: Rick Lewers, David Hanger from Woolgoolga, and John Tongue from Ulverstone in Tasmania.)
Update: Here’s a media release from the Diocese of Armidale:
Bishop elect Anglican Diocese of Armidale named
Bishop elect Anglican Diocese of Armidale is Rick Lewers from the southern Sydney suburb of Engadine.
Following the announcement he said he felt it an honour that colleagues… had prayed for him in the lead-up to the Election Synod at Moree Friday-Saturday November 11-12.
“It’s rather humbling when so much trust has been placed in me,” he said. “There’s a level of nervous apprehension when my job is to introduce people to the love of Jesus and an eternal future.”
Bishop Peter Brain said he understood the election weekend was really united. “There was an excellent range of candidates and the choice of Rick Lewers confirms he will serve people very well,” he said. “I have known Rick for many years and regard him as a thoughtful, caring and faithful leader.
Rick is married to Janene, with three adult children Nathan, Rachel and Jacob.
