“The service for the consecration of the first woman bishop in Victoria, Canon Barbara Darling, will be held in St Paul’s Cathedral, corner of Flinders and Swanston Streets, on Saturday 31 May, commencing at 11am.
In this historic and colourful service, Anglican Archbishop of Melbourne, Dr Philip Freier, will consecrate Canon Darling as an assistant bishop in the Diocese of Melbourne.
Canon Darling (60) is only the second woman to be made a bishop in Australia, following the recent appointment and consecration of Archdeacon Kay Goldsworthy as an assistant bishop in the Diocese of Perth.
During the service Canon Darling will receive her cope and mitre, the traditional ceremonial dress of bishops, as well has her pastoral staff, the sign of her new Episcopal ministry.
19 bishops of the Anglican Church of Australia, including Bishop Kay Goldworthy, and the Primate, Dr Philip Aspinall, will also participate in the service; and representatives of other denominations and faiths will be in attendance.”
