The next Archbishop of Sydney will be elected at the special session of Sydney Synod beginning Monday 5th August. These prayer suggestions (PDF file) were distributed at the ACL-organised prayer meetings around Sydney in June.
Even if you couldn’t attend, these may be of some help as you pray. Here is the text from the PDF file –
Part 1 – Praying more generally for the spread of the gospel in Sydney and beyond –
- Give thanks for the Lord’s mercy in calling men & women to know him.
- Give thanks for the leadership of Peter & Christine Jensen and pray for them as they conclude this phase of their Christian service.
- Give thanks for the establishment of GAFCON / FCA.
- Pray for Moore College and its role in training men and women to preach Christ.
- Give thanks for the Diocesan Mission and pray we would continue to be outward looking and love our neighbours with the gospel.
Part 2 – Praying for the election process and for the new Archbishop –
- that the Lord would give us a man who loves him and who obeys his word.
- wisdom for Synod members, both in the Synod and beforehand.
- excellent and godly relations between the nominees and supporters.
- that real grace, courtesy and love will be shown on the floor of Synod.
- helpful and accurate reporting in the media – both in the run up to the election and also of the Synod itself.
- for wise behaviour for all those who use social media to comment.
- that there might be a real sense of godly agreement on the final choice.
- that the new Archbishop will be able to assume his new role with a minimum of disruption.
- that we will keep all this in perspective and not be distracted from evangelism and Jesus’ call to make disciples.
