The Anglican Church League congratulates the Rev Gary Nelson on his election as the seventh bishop of the diocese of North West Australia. Gary has been a godly and effective minister of the gospel in the diocese of Sydney since his ordination in 1983. Having served curacies in Seaforth and Dapto, he was rector of Panania for 17 years before he took on responsibility for the Department of External Studies at Moore College.

During Gary’s time at Moore College, the correspondence courses of the College have continued to spread around the globe. Translation into African, European and Asian languages has been accelerated. A number of new initiatives such as MOCLAM have allowed greater flexibility and even wider influence. Through his attendance at GAFCON and the links made there, Gary has been able to assist in the growth of effective biblical training in countries as diverse as Nigeria, Cuba, Mauritus, Myanmar and Russia.

Gary is known as a faithful Bible teacher and is passionately concerned to equip pastors and other gospel workers to exercise the ministry God has given them. In recent years Gary has been involved in significant cross-cultural work which has given him insight that will no doubt be invaluable in this new work to which he has been called.

We assure Gary and Christine of our prayers as they prepare to make the move to the North West and we look forward to continued fellowship in the gospel of the Lord Jesus. Building on the work of those faithful bishops who have gone before him, we trust that he will be used to encourage godliness and growth amongst the churches of that immense diocese.
